ISLAMABAD: The United States has formally approved a $93 million foreignmilitary sale to India comprising advanced Javelin anti-tank guided missilesystems and precision-guided Excalibur artillery shells, the Pentagonannounced on Wednesday.
The package includes up to 100 Javelin command launch units and associatedequipment along with 216 rounds of the GPS-guided 155mm Excaliburprojectiles, according to the Defense Security Cooperation Agency.
The proposed sale will enhance India’s capability to meet current andfuture threats by providing advanced anti-armour and long-range precisionfire support, the agency stated in its notification to Congress.
Javelin missiles, co-developed by Raytheon and Lockheed Martin, have provenhighly effective against modern armoured vehicles and are already inservice with several NATO members.
The Excalibur rounds offer extended range and pinpoint accuracy, significantly reducing collateral damage compared with conventionalartillery ammunition.
Analysts say the approval comes amid heightened India-China border tensionsand reflects deepening defence ties between Washington and New Delhi underthe Indo-Pacific strategy.
Pakistan has repeatedly expressed concern over major conventional armstransfers to India, arguing they disturb the strategic balance in SouthAsia.
Defence officials in Islamabad are likely to view the latest transaction aspart of a broader pattern of American military support to India that beganaccelerating after the 2016 Logistics Exchange Memorandum of Agreement.
The transaction still requires final congressional approval but suchnotifications are rarely blocked once formally transmitted.
