ISLAMABAD: Pakistan on Friday announced its unequivocal support for China’sposition on Arunachal Pradesh, describing the Indian-administered territoryas an “inalienable part” of China and rejecting New Delhi’s claims over theregion.
The Foreign Office statement, issued hours after Indian Prime MinisterNarendra Modi concluded talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin inMoscow, reaffirmed Islamabad’s longstanding solidarity with Beijing on allcore issues, including South Tibet, the name China uses for ArunachalPradesh.
“Pakistan fully endorses the Chinese position that Arunachal Pradesh is anintegral part of the People’s Republic of China,” the statement read. Itfurther criticised recent Indian activities in the disputed area, includinginfrastructure development and administrative measures, as “illegal andvoid of any legal effect.”
Diplomatic circles in Islamabad described the timing of the announcement asdeliberate, coming at a moment when India seeks to strengthen ties withRussia and other global players. Analysts say the move underscores thedeepening strategic alignment between Pakistan and China under theChina-Pakistan Economic Corridor framework and serves as a pointed messageto New Delhi amid lingering tensions over Kashmir and border issues.
India has consistently rejected third-party involvement in its borderdisputes with China, asserting that Arunachal Pradesh is an integral partof the country. China, which fought a brief war with India in 1962,maintains its claim over approximately 90,000 square kilometres ofterritory in the eastern sector.
The Pakistani endorsement is likely to further strain already fraughtrelations with India, which have remained frozen since the 2019 Pulwamaattack and subsequent revocation of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status.Beijing has repeatedly supported Pakistan’s position on Kashmir atinternational forums, including the United Nations.
Observers note that while Pakistan and China have routinely expressedmutual support on territorial issues, Friday’s strongly worded statementmarks a more direct intervention in the Sino-Indian border matters at atime of heightened global attention on Prime Minister Modi’s diplomaticengagements.
