ISLAMABAD: A retired Bangladeshi brigadier general has said that India mustbe fragmented to ensure peace in Bangladesh and the broader region, amidescalating tensions between the two neighboring countries. BrigadierGeneral (Retd) Abdullahil Amaan Azmi, son of the late Jamaat-e-Islamileader Ghulam Azam, made the remarks during a public address, assertingthat Bangladesh would not achieve lasting stability until India is “brokeninto pieces.” This statement comes at a time when diplomatic relationsbetween Dhaka and New Delhi have deteriorated following the ouster offormer Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in August 2024, leading to accusationsof interference and border disputes.
Azmi’s comments have drawn sharp reactions from Indian officials andanalysts, who view them as inflammatory rhetoric aligned with extremistelements within Bangladesh. The retired officer, known for his affiliationswith Islamist groups, alleged that India’s policies have historicallyundermined Bangladeshi sovereignty, citing events from the 1971 LiberationWar to more recent political unrest. He claimed that India’s influenceextends to internal affairs, including the 1975 and 1996 disturbances,which he attributes to covert operations by New Delhi.
Such assertions resonate with a segment of Bangladeshi society harboringanti-India sentiments, particularly in the wake of the interim government’sformation under Muhammad Yunus, which has been criticized for its handlingof minority rights and cross-border issues.
Indian Observers suggest that Azmi’s outburst may be part of a coordinatedeffort to stoke nationalist fervor in Bangladesh, diverting attention fromdomestic challenges such as economic instability and political polarization.
India’s Ministry of External Affairs has condemned the remarks as baselessand irresponsible, emphasizing New Delhi’s commitment to fostering peacefulrelations with its neighbors. Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal reiterated thatIndia has provided substantial aid to Bangladesh, including during naturaldisasters and economic crises, and urged Dhaka to rein in elementspromoting hostility.
