ISLAMABAD: Intelligence agencies have uncovered compelling evidence of asystematic anti-Pakistan social media campaign being orchestrated throughdozens of Twitter (X) accounts operated from India and Afghanistan, official sources revealed on Monday.
The agencies stated that these accounts are actively engaged in spreadingfabricated stories, rumours and misleading narratives aimed at tarnishingPakistan’s image and sowing discord among its people. The operation appearsto be a coordinated effort between networks based in both neighbouringcountries with the primary objective of defaming Pakistan on theinternational stage.
Sources disclosed that several digital accounts originating fromAfghanistan are promoting terrorism-related and extremist content while alarger number of accounts traced to India have been found disseminatinghate speech, provocative material and anti-Pakistan propaganda. The contentis carefully crafted to influence public opinion, create distrust in stateinstitutions and destabilise internal harmony.
According to the findings, clear indicators point to Indian backing andpatronage of these disinformation networks. The campaigns exploitreligious, ethnic and political sensitivities to amplify division withinPakistani society and portray the country as unstable and unsafe before theglobal community.
The report highlighted that the identified accounts form part of a broaderhybrid warfare strategy that combines traditional hostility with moderndigital tools. Agencies have noted a marked increase in such activitiesfollowing recent diplomatic and security developments in the region.
In response to the threat, relevant authorities have acceleratedinvestigative measures and identified numerous suspicious accounts forimmediate action. Technical analysis including IP tracing, behaviouralpatterns and content coordination has provided substantial proof of foreignstate-linked involvement in running these operations.
Security officials emphasised that the exposure of this networkdemonstrates Pakistan’s growing capability to counter fifth-generationwarfare tactics. They warned that any attempt to undermine nationalsovereignty through cyberspace will be met with firm resolve.
The development comes at a time when regional tensions remain high andunderscores the expanding role of social media platforms as battlegroundsfor influence operations between adversarial states.
