Pakistan Prepares Decisive Response After Bannu Police Post Attack

ISLAMABAD: Security officials have hinted that preparations for a strong retaliatory action following the martyrdom of 15 police personnel in a coordinated terrorist attack on the Fateh Khel police checkpoint in Bannu district, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The assault occurred late Saturday night when terrorists rammed an explosives-laden vehicle into the post, triggering a massive blast. Militants then launched an ambush with heavy weaponry and quadcopters from multiple directions.

Bannu Regional Police Officer Sajjad Khan stated that 18 personnel were present at the post at the time. Fifteen were martyred while three sustained injuries. Rescue teams recovered the injured from the debris.

Initial investigations and technical intelligence indicate the attack was planned and orchestrated by elements of Fitna al-Khawarij (TTP) operating from Afghan soil. The Hafiz Gul Bahadur faction, a TTP offshoot, has reportedly claimed responsibility.

The Foreign Office summoned the Afghan chargé d’affaires on Monday and handed over a strong demarche. Pakistan has reiterated its position that the Afghan Taliban regime must take immediate, verifiable action against terrorist groups using its territory. Officials stated that Pakistan reserves the right to respond decisively.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and President Asif Ali Zardari strongly condemned the attack. State funerals were held for the martyred officers on Sunday.

This incident comes as Operation Ghazab Lil-Haq, launched in late February 2026, continues. The operation was initiated in response to repeated cross-border provocations and has already targeted multiple Taliban-linked positions inside Afghanistan. Pakistani forces have reported significant degradation of terrorist infrastructure during the campaign.

Senior security sources indicated that the Bannu attack demonstrates the Afghan side’s failure to control militants despite repeated Pakistani warnings. Islamabad had previously stated that the Taliban’s attitude would determine their sincerity in curbing terrorism. Recent events suggest a lack of concrete action from Kabul.

Key data from the Bannu attack shows the scale of destruction. The vehicle-borne IED completely demolished the police post and an armoured vehicle stationed there. Nearby structures also suffered heavy damage. The subsequent firefight lasted until security reinforcements arrived.

Pakistan’s security forces have intensified intelligence-based operations across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Multiple cordon-and-search activities are underway in suspected hideouts near the border regions.

Background to the current tensions includes years of cross-border militancy. Since the Taliban takeover in Afghanistan, Pakistan has faced a surge in TTP attacks, with officials documenting hundreds of incidents linked to Afghan sanctuaries. Trade and border management have also been affected.

Market reactions in the region remained cautious on Monday. Local businesses in Bannu observed a shutdown to mourn the fallen officers. Residents expressed grief and called for stronger border security measures.

Diplomatically, Pakistan continues to engage through multiple channels while maintaining its red lines on national security. The Foreign Office has made it clear that no compromise will be made on protecting Pakistani citizens.

**Strategic implications remain significant.** Continued inaction from the Afghan side could lead to further escalation. Pakistani officials have signaled that Operation Ghazab Lil-Haq will not conclude without credible guarantees and demonstrable steps against terrorist networks.

Future developments will likely include intensified kinetic operations along the western border and sustained diplomatic pressure. Security analysts note that long-term stability requires verifiable dismantling of cross-border militant infrastructure.

The coming days are expected to see additional details on the operational response as authorities finalise their strategy against those responsible for the Bannu attack.
