ISLAMABAD: In a brazen morning assault, unknown gunmen have struck at the heart of religious scholarship and political stability in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Four terrorists on two motorcycles opened indiscriminate fire on the white vehicle of Sheikh ul Hadith Maulana Muhammad Idris in Utmanzai area of Charsadda around 8:10 AM.

The former JUI-F MPA and renowned scholar was heading to Darul Uloom Utmanzai to deliver Hadith lectures when the attackers targeted him directly.

He sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was martyred en route to the hospital. Two security personnel escorting him were injured in the attack.

This incident highlights the growing threat to voices supporting national unity and Pakistan Armed Forces in the region.

Charsadda police confirmed the targeted nature of the assault. Attackers fled the scene immediately after the firing.

Security forces and police launched a swift search operation across the area. Forensic teams collected evidence including CCTV footage from nearby locations.

Maulana Idris enjoyed widespread respect as a teacher of Hadith and district Amir of JUI-F in Charsadda. His recent public support for Pakistan Army operations against militants had drawn threats from hostile elements.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif strongly condemned the cowardly act. He expressed deep grief and directed authorities to ensure swift justice.

KP Governor Faisal Karim Kundi also conveyed sorrow and assured full support to the bereaved family. Deputy Commissioner Charsadda visited the hospital and appealed for calm while promising action against culprits.

This attack comes amid a concerning surge in terrorism-related incidents in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Official data shows hundreds of attacks reported in the province last year with security forces neutralizing numerous terrorists in intelligence-based operations.

Pakistan’s counter-terrorism efforts have intensified with Pakistan Army leading from the front. Troops conduct regular actions in high-risk areas resulting in significant militant casualties while minimizing civilian harm.

Analysts note that such targeted killings aim to create fear among religious scholars who openly back state institutions. Maulana Idris had faced online threats from ISKP-linked accounts after praising Army Chief’s stance on national security.

JUI-F leadership reacted sharply. They announced protests and a strike call viewing the martyrdom as an attack on pro-Pakistan religious voices.

Large crowds gathered at District Headquarters Hospital in Charsadda after the news spread. Mourners expressed anger while demanding immediate arrests.

Security experts point to cross-border linkages. Terror outfits operating from Afghan soil often exploit porous borders to destabilize Pakistan’s western regions.

Pakistan Armed Forces have sacrificed thousands of personnel in the war against terror since 2001. Their relentless operations dismantled major militant networks yet residual threats persist in certain districts.

Charsadda district has witnessed previous high-profile attacks. The pattern suggests systematic targeting of influential local figures who promote peace and support law enforcement.

Investigators are examining possible links to banned groups like TTP factions or ISKP sympathizers. Multiple intelligence agencies are coordinating to trace the attackers’ networks.

The two injured constables remain under treatment. Their bravery in protecting the scholar is being acknowledged at higher levels.

Funeral prayers for Maulana Muhammad Idris were scheduled in Tarangzai with thousands expected to attend. His martyrdom has united various religious and political segments in condemnation.

This tragedy underscores the challenges Pakistan faces in maintaining stability in KP. Economic losses from terrorism run into billions while thousands of families suffer.

Pakistan Army’s Zarb-e-Azb and subsequent operations significantly reduced terror infrastructure. Yet new hybrid tactics including targeted assassinations require adaptive strategies.

Local residents in Utmanzai expressed shock. Many described Maulana Idris as a voice of reason who always advocated dialogue and national interest.

Government officials have vowed not to let such incidents derail development and peace initiatives in the province. Enhanced security measures for religious scholars are under review.

The attack also raises questions about intelligence coordination at district levels. Despite general alerts, the assailants managed to execute the plan swiftly.
