ISLAMABAD – Pakistan Tehreek -e-Insaf (PTI) is all set to create historywith its new climate change programme.

PTI is targeting to plant about 10 billion saplings under “Tree Tsunamiprogramme” during next five years to tackle climate change issue in thecountry.

A senior leader of PTI Malik Amin Aslam said that PTI in its manifesto hadpromised to expand and restore the fractured forests of the country througha “10 Billion Tree Tsunami” spread over 5 years under principles of trueforest valuation, community stewardship as well as public-privatepartnerships.

Amin said unlike other political parties, PTI is the only political partywhich has come up with ‘Green Promise’ in their party’s manifesto. “PTI hasalready promised in its 100 days agenda to launch 10 Billion Tree TsunamiProgramme countrywide to tackle climate change.

“We will take action to manage climate change and make Pakistan greenerunder our Green Growth Agenda by investing in long term adaptation toclimate change, addressing the root causes of environmental pollution,strengthening our institutions, planting 10 billion trees in 5 years, andby improving our disaster relief management and risk reduction,” he furthersaid.

He said environmental conservation will be at the core of PTI’s governance.Pakistan ranks 7th on the most adversely affected countries due to climatechange. Both, climate change and environmental pollution pose a gravethreat to Pakistan’s sustainable future, he added.

The negative impact on country’s weather pattern is already evident; risingtemperatures, major flooding, prolonged droughts, unpredictable rainfallsetc cost Pakistan an estimated billion of dollar.He said, “We will establish a Green Growth Task Force under the PrimeMinister’s cell to facilitate necessary legislation and implement the GreenGrowth Agenda.”
