PTI Secretary General Claimed Imran Khan Tortured in Prison

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Secretary General Salman Akram Raja on Tuesday claimed that party founder Imran Khan is being subjected to torture in Adiala Jail, resulting in complete loss of vision in one eye.

Raja made the claims while addressing the media outside the Supreme Court. He said Imran Khan’s health, along with that of his wife Bushra Bibi, faces serious risks due to prison conditions and lack of proper medical care.

The PTI leader stated that Imran Khan’s right eye vision has been severely compromised. Reports citing party sources indicate an alleged loss of up to 85 percent vision in the affected eye, with pain reportedly starting in November last year and progressing to total loss by December.

Raja claimed that despite repeated complaints, prison authorities provided only basic eye drops instead of specialist treatment or hospital referral. He further alleged that court orders regarding meetings and medical access have not been fully implemented.

“Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi are political prisoners whose fundamental rights are being violated,” Raja said. He contrasted their situation with another political prisoner who reportedly enjoyed full facilities in jail.

The PTI Secretary General informed that the party has filed multiple petitions in the Supreme Court but hearings remain pending. “We have exhausted all legal avenues and are now presenting our case before the public,” he added.

Imran Khan has been in custody since August 2023, facing multiple legal cases. PTI leaders have consistently described his imprisonment as political victimization, claiming over 300 cases registered against him.

Bushra Bibi, who is also incarcerated, underwent emergency eye surgery earlier in April 2026 for retinal detachment, according to party sources. Concerns persist about post-surgery care and continued solitary confinement conditions for both.

No immediate official response from jail authorities or the federal government was available on the specific allegations. The Interior Ministry and prison administration have previously denied mistreatment claims, maintaining that all inmates receive standard medical facilities as per rules.

Legal experts note that Supreme Court directives on prisoner rights, including timely medical access and family meetings, have been issued in several high-profile cases. Implementation gaps remain a recurring issue in Pakistan’s prison system.

Market and public reactions remained muted immediately after the press conference, though PTI workers expressed strong concern on social media platforms. Party supporters called for immediate judicial intervention and independent medical examination.

**Broader Implications**

The latest claims add to ongoing debates about judicial oversight of detention conditions and political cases. Analysts suggest that timely resolution through transparent medical reports could help address public distrust in the system.

PTI has indicated it will continue pursuing legal remedies while mobilizing public support. Future developments may depend on the Supreme Court’s response to pending petitions and any independent verification of the medical situation.

Authorities are expected to face pressure for detailed updates on Imran Khan’s current health status and compliance with prior court orders. The matter remains under active legal and political scrutiny.
