China and Russia hits out at US at the UN Security Council over Afghanistan deadlock

NEW YORK – World Powers China and Russia hit out at United States at the UNSecurity Council over Afghanistan deadlock.

World powers at the UN asked US to resume the peace negotiations few daysafter US President Donald Trump called off the talks with the militantgroup.

The envoys who addressed the United Nations Security Council reiteratedthat the only solution to the ongoing conflict in Afghanistan is apolitical settlement, TOLONEWS has reported.

“Russia consistently supports the aspirations of the Afghan people toachieve resilient peace in the IRA. We are genuinely interested inpromoting Afghan-led and Afghan-owned peace and reconciliation process andsubsequent stabilization in the country. We have stated on multipleoccasions that a peaceful, stable and thriving Afghanistan is our sharedgoal,” Russian Permanent Representative Vassily Nebenzia said.

He said his country is gravely concerned about the suspension of the talksbetween the US and the Taliban.

“We regret the pause in negotiations between the US and the Talibanmovement. The positive outcome of these negotiations would have unlockedpromotion of peaceful national reconciliation and all-encompassing Afghansettlement,” said Nebenzia.

The UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Afghanistan,Tadamichi Yamamoto, also called for a swift start of direct talks betweenthe Afghan government and the Taliban.

“The events of recent days and weeks have shown, more than ever, theurgency of finding a political settlement to the long Afghan conflict.Efforts over the past year produced opportunities for peace. This createdhope, but also fear for many. But one point remains clear: conflict canonly be resolved by direct talks between Afghan people. These talks must beinclusive, representing the whole spectrum of Afghan society,” Yamamotosaid.

He said that it is imperative that direct talks between the IslamicRepublic of Afghanistan and the Taliban commence as soon as possible.

On the presidential elections, he said, “concerns still remain ahead of theelections. One is security, another is voter turnout, and the other ispossible fraud and irregularities.”

The Chinese permanent representative to the UN Liu Jieyi said that Beijingis willing to see the United States and the Taliban to resume their talks.

He said that China wants all parties involved in the issue to respect theinterests of the people of Afghanistan.
