Pakistani Security Forces Foil Suicide Vehicle Attack Near Military Post

Post

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan security forces successfully foiled a suicide vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (SVBIED) attack targeting a military post in Eidak Mirali area of North Waziristan district.

The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) confirmed the incident, stating that alert troops destroyed the explosives-laden vehicle before it could reach the post.

No casualties or damage occurred to security personnel or the installation.

Following the foiled attack, a swift intelligence-based operation was launched in the surrounding area, resulting in the elimination of four terrorists.

The military identified the attackers as members of the Indian-backed militant group, with links to TTP factions operating in the region.

Weapons and suicide vests recovered from the site included three AK-47 rifles, two suicide jackets packed with 15 kilograms of explosives each, and communication devices.

Security forces had been on high alert in the area following recent intelligence inputs about planned attacks during the post-Eid period.

North Waziristan has seen intensified counter-terrorism operations since January 2026, with over 65 intelligence-based operations conducted in the district so far this year.

Official figures show that security forces have neutralized 112 militants across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province in the first five months of 2026.

The latest incident occurred amid a series of successful operations around Miran Shah, where more than 25 terrorists have been eliminated in the past two weeks.

“Such desperate attempts reflect the weakening of terror networks under sustained pressure,” ISPR said in its statement.

The military spokesperson added that search and clearance operations are continuing to apprehend facilitators and dismantle remaining hideouts.

North Waziristan, once a stronghold of militant activity, has undergone significant military campaigns including Operation Zarb-e-Azb in 2014 and subsequent stability efforts.

Despite relative calm in recent years, sporadic attacks have increased since late 2024, particularly from TTP elements regrouping across the Afghan border.

Pakistan has documented over 450 cross-border incidents involving TTP militants since 2023, according to Ministry of Interior data.

The foiled attack involved a vehicle carrying approximately 80-100 kilograms of high-grade explosives, military sources revealed.

Local administration in Miran Shah reported improved coordination between intelligence agencies, Frontier Corps, and regular army units.

No civilian casualties were reported in the operation, with residents expressing support for the swift response.

The development comes as security forces maintain pressure on militant supply lines in the Shawal and Razmak valleys.

Analysts note that vehicle-borne attacks have decreased by nearly 40 percent in North Waziristan compared to 2024 levels due to enhanced checkpoints and surveillance.

Pakistan’s military has deployed advanced drone reconnaissance and ground sensors along key routes in the district.

Diplomatic channels continue to highlight concerns over safe havens across the border, with multiple dossiers shared with Afghan authorities.

Quetta and Peshawar stock exchanges showed no major disruption following the news, indicating market confidence in security measures.

North Waziristan District Commissioner praised the forces for preventing what could have been a major incident during a period of heightened movement.

The operation underscores the effectiveness of proactive intelligence gathering in the merged tribal districts.

Broader regional security remains a priority as Pakistan balances internal stability with economic development projects in former FATA areas.

Reconstruction efforts under the Accelerated Implementation Program have allocated over Rs85 billion for infrastructure in North Waziristan since 2023.

Security officials indicated that follow-up actions will target financial and logistical networks supporting such attacks.

The coming days are expected to feature intensified patrolling and community engagement initiatives to gather further intelligence.

Sustained operations aim to prevent militants from exploiting seasonal movements and border porosity.

As clearance activities progress, authorities will assess long-term measures to strengthen perimeter security around military installations in sensitive areas.
