Boundary Count Rule: ICC makes interesting announcement over World Cup 2023

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has unequivocally stated that the boundary count-back rule, which caused significant controversy during the 2019 ODI World Cup final, will not be a determining factor in the 2023 World Cup.

In the memorable 2019 final, the victors were determined through the boundary count-back rule after the super over concluded in a tie. England clinched the title as they had struck more boundaries (26) than New Zealand (17).

For the upcoming ICC World Cup in 2023, the boundary count-back rule has been discarded. Instead, tied matches will be resolved through Super Overs, and in the rare instance of a tied Super Over, subsequent Super Overs will be played to determine the winner.

It is important to note that in 2019, this change in protocol stemmed from a recommendation put forth by the ICC Cricket Committee, led by former India skipper Anil Kumble. The Chief Executives' Committee (CEC) subsequently approved the use of Super Overs as a means to decide results in ICC events.

This decision was based on the consensus that Super Overs provided an exhilarating and captivating conclusion to the game, and this rule will remain in place for all matches in both the ODI and T20I World Cups.

The highly anticipated mega event is scheduled to commence on October 5th, 2023, in India, promising an exciting and boundary-count-free competition for cricket enthusiasts worldwide.
