Frustrated India reacts over Afghan peace talks leaving India in isolation despite 3 billion investment

NEW DELHI – Frustrated India reacts over successful Afghan peace talksleaving India in isolation despite $3 billion investment.

Indian Ambassador Vinay Kumar said that New Delhi has had serious talkswith Washington about peace in Afghanistan, and he thinks Afghans shouldhave full ownership of the peace process.

The Indian ambassador to Afghanistan stressed that the goal of peaceefforts in Afghanistan should be to completely cut off terrorism in theregion, and the Afghan process should be inclusive.

He also said that sustainable peace in Afghanistan provides furtheropportunities for strengthening cooperation between India and Afghanistan.

Regarding the ongoing peace efforts by US Government, Ambassador Kumar saidthat India has talked with the US regarding peace in Afghanistan, and thatIndia supports the US efforts.

“We have partnered with the United States, and we are engaged with theUnited States in serious dialogue (with) discussions on the peace-relatedissues and we fully support the peace involving Ambassador Khalilzad,”Kumar said, referring to Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad, the US peace envoyinvolved with the Afghan peace negotiations.

“We think that a sustainable peace in Afghanistan in the first placerequires…the dismantling of infrastructure that supports violence andterrorism,” Kumar said.

Kumar says so far India has trained 6,000 Afghan officers and contributed350 projects throughout Afghanistan.

When Kumar was asked whether the return of a Taliban Emirate to Afghanistanwould be tolerated by India, Kumar said that “independence and territorialsovereignty mean that people choose the kind of government they want.
