ISLAMABAD: The much-awaited Africa submarine cable, one of the largestinternational internet infrastructure projects, has successfully landed inKarachi, marking a major leap in Pakistan’s digital connectivity with therest of the world.
The 45,000-kilometre cable system, described as the longest submarine cableever deployed, reached Pakistani shores through the dedicated landingstation developed by Transworld Associates in collaboration with the global2Africa consortium.
Officials said the new cable will add over 300 terabits per second ofadditional international bandwidth capacity, significantly enhancinginternet speed, reliability and affordability across the country.
The project is backed by a consortium that includes Meta, China MobileInternational, Orange, Telecom Egypt, Vodafone, and Pakistan’s TransworldAssociates as the official landing partner.
Industry experts believe the arrival of 2Africa Pearl will reduce latencyfor Pakistani users accessing global cloud services, streaming platformsand enterprise applications while providing crucial route diversity againstexisting cable disruptions.
The landing comes at a time when Pakistan is witnessing exponential growthin data consumption driven by rising smartphone penetration and increasingdigital financial services.
Transworld Associates has invested heavily in a state-of-the-art cablelanding station in Karachi equipped with latest security and redundancyfeatures to ensure uninterrupted service delivery.
The Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC) played a key role infast-tracking regulatory approvals and providing single-window facilitationfor the multi-billion-dollar project.
Analysts predict the enhanced international connectivity will attract moreglobal tech companies to establish regional data centres in Pakistan andsupport the government’s Digital Pakistan vision.
The cable system will eventually interconnect 46 landing locations acrossAfrica, Europe, Middle East and Asia, making Pakistan a vital digitalgateway in the region.
