founder banned
ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Huzaifa Rahmanhas disclosed that the government has finalised its future course of actionagainst Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan and the partyitself. Speaking to journalists on Friday, the minister stated that strictmeasures would be implemented immediately to curtail the former primeminister’s political activities from jail.
According to Mr Rahman, all political meetings of the PTI founder have beencompletely stopped with immediate effect. He clarified that even meetingswith family members have been suspended because, in the government’sassessment, these visits were being utilised for political purposes ratherthan personal interaction. The minister emphasised that no exception wouldbe granted in this regard.
The most significant revelation concerned the future status of PTI itself.Mr Rahman confirmed that a formal proposal to declare PakistanTehreek-e-Insaf a proscribed organisation would soon be presented beforethe federal cabinet for approval. Once the cabinet endorses the summary, necessary legal steps would be initiated to implement the ban, he added.
The information minister maintained that these decisions were taken in linewith national security requirements and existing legal provisions. Heargued that continued political activity by the PTI leadership, even fromincarceration, posed challenges to public order and state authority.
Political analysts view these statements as the strongest indication yet ofthe government’s intention to dismantle the organisational structure of thecountry’s largest opposition party. The move comes amid ongoing legal casesagainst Mr Khan and senior PTI leaders on charges ranging from corruptionto incitement and terrorism-related offences.
PTI leadership has consistently rejected all allegations as politicallymotivated and part of a broader campaign to sideline the party ahead offuture electoral contests. The party has vowed to challenge any attempt toimpose a ban through constitutional and legal means.
The development has triggered serious concerns among rights organisationsand opposition allies regarding shrinking democratic space and the use ofstate machinery against political opponents. International observers arelikely to closely monitor subsequent actions taken by the authorities.
