ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has been re-elected to the Executive Council of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) for the term 2026-2028, securing another two-year tenure in the 41-member policy-making body of the global watchdog.
The election took place during the 30th Conference of States Parties held in The Hague from November 24 to 28. Pakistan, representing the Asia-Pacific group, received strong support from member states, reflecting continued international confidence in its commitment to the Chemical Weapons Convention.
Foreign Office spokesperson confirmed the development, terming it a recognition of Pakistan’s responsible role in promoting chemical safety and security. The country has remained an active OPCW member since joining the convention in 1997 and regularly hosts inspection teams. Reports revealed that Israel and India attempted to block Pakistan’s candidacy.
Pakistan’s return to the council ensures continued Asian representation in decisions concerning destruction of chemical weapons stockpiles, prevention of re-emergence threats and promotion of peaceful chemistry applications worldwide.
The Executive Council meets regularly to oversee implementation of the convention and can convene urgently in case of verified chemical weapons use by any state or non-state actor.
