ISLAMABAD: Two brave soldiers of the Pakistan Army embraced martyrdom and atleast three injured while defending the homeland against intrusion by Afghan forces, as fierce retaliatory operations continue along the porous border.
Information Minister Attaullah Tarar confirmed the incident, stating that two security personnel were martyred and three others injured in the ongoing clashes. The minister highlighted that Pakistani forces have inflicted significant losses on the opposing side, with at least 36 to 44 Afghan Taliban operatives reported killed in the exchanges.
The confrontation escalated following recent cross-border airstrikes by Pakistan targeting militant hideouts in Afghanistan’s eastern provinces, including Nangarhar and Paktika. Pakistan’s military described those strikes as precise actions against groups responsible for attacks inside Pakistani territory, claiming over 70 militants eliminated.
In response, Afghan authorities launched what they termed retaliatory operations late Thursday, engaging Pakistani positions along the Durand Line. Taliban spokespersons claimed capturing multiple Pakistani posts and inflicting heavy casualties, though Pakistani officials strongly disputed these figures, asserting no posts were lost and no additional soldiers martyred beyond the initial two.
Tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan have simmered for months, rooted in mutual accusations over cross-border militancy. Pakistan has repeatedly urged Kabul to prevent terrorist groups from using Afghan soil for attacks on its security forces and civilians.
The latest violence follows a pattern seen in previous escalations, including deadly clashes last October that resulted in dozens of casualties on both sides. A fragile ceasefire mediated by regional actors had temporarily eased hostilities, but incidents involving suicide bombings and militant raids in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa districts like Bannu and Bajaur reignited the cycle.
In Bannu, a suicide bomber rammed an explosive-laden motorcycle into a security convoy, killing two soldiers, including a lieutenant colonel, and prompting Pakistan’s strong warning of no restraint in future operations.
Analysts point to the Durand Line as a perennial flashpoint, where porous borders facilitate militant movements. Pakistan has long maintained that Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and affiliated groups operate from Afghan sanctuaries, launching attacks that have claimed numerous military and civilian lives.
Afghan officials, meanwhile, accuse Pakistan of violating sovereignty through airstrikes that sometimes affect civilians, including women and children, in border villages. Reports from Nangarhar indicated civilian casualties in recent strikes, though Pakistan insists targets were exclusively militant infrastructure.
The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) has emphasized the resolve of Pakistani troops in defending territorial integrity. Operations remain active, with forces responding robustly to any aggression from across the border.
Minister Tarar reiterated that Pakistan’s response has been measured yet decisive, aimed at neutralizing threats without seeking broader conflict. He noted the destruction of enemy posts and equipment as evidence of effective countermeasures.
Border security remains a top priority for Islamabad amid rising militant activities. Recent weeks saw multiple attacks attributed to groups using Afghan territory, prompting intensified military vigilance.
Diplomatic channels between the two neighbors have been strained, with border crossings intermittently closed and trade affected. Experts warn that prolonged clashes could destabilize the region further, impacting counter-terrorism efforts and humanitarian access.
Pakistan’s leadership has expressed commitment to dialogue for de-escalation, while stressing that national security cannot be compromised. The sacrifices of the martyred soldiers underscore the heavy cost borne by the armed forces in safeguarding the nation.
As operations continue, tributes pour in for the fallen heroes, with calls for national unity in supporting the troops. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the challenges along the volatile frontier.
The situation on the ground evolves rapidly, with both sides monitoring developments closely. Sustained peace requires addressing root causes, including militant safe havens and border management.
Pakistan Army remains steadfast in its duty, ready to repel any intrusion while pursuing stability through strength and resolve.
