Terrorists Attack on Police Check Post, Two Federal Constabulary personnel injured

ISLAMABAD: Two personnel of the Federal Constabulary sustained injuries when unidentified assailants launched an attack on a checkpost in the Salgazi area of Wazir subdivision in Bannu district on Tuesday.

The incident took place at Post No 4, a strategic security installation positioned on a hilltop under the jurisdiction of Ahmadzai police station.

Local police sources confirmed the assault, noting that the attackers opened fire on the post before fleeing the scene.

The injured personnel received immediate medical attention and were shifted to a nearby hospital for treatment, where their condition was described as stable.

Circle Officer Wazir subdivision Raham Ayaz Khan stated that security forces responded swiftly by initiating a comprehensive search operation in the surrounding hilly terrain and adjoining areas.

He added that operations have been intensified to identify and apprehend the perpetrators responsible for the attack.

This latest incident underscores the persistent security challenges in Bannu and adjacent districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where militant groups continue to target law enforcement and paramilitary outposts.

Bannu district, bordering North Waziristan, has witnessed a surge in such attacks in recent months, often attributed to factions operating from across the Afghan border.

The Federal Constabulary, tasked with maintaining law and order in sensitive regions, frequently deploys personnel at such checkposts to monitor movement and prevent infiltration.

Officials have not yet attributed the attack to any specific group, but similar incidents in the region have been linked to Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan elements or affiliated networks.

In the broader context, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has experienced heightened militant activity since late 2024, with security forces conducting multiple operations to counter threats.

Recent weeks saw several high-profile assaults, including a foiled major attack on a police post in the same Wazir subdivision, where three militants were killed and nine others injured during exchanges of fire.

Another incident involved a late-night assault on the Khonia Khel police post, which security forces repelled successfully despite heavy weapons used by the attackers.

Broader violence in the province includes suicide bombings and improvised explosive device blasts targeting police stations and checkpoints.

For instance, a motorcycle bomb explosion outside a police station in Bannu killed two civilians and injured over a dozen others in mid-February.

In a separate event, a suicide vehicle-borne attack in nearby Bajaur district resulted in significant casualties among security personnel and civilians.

These attacks highlight the evolving tactics employed by militants, ranging from direct gunfire to explosive devices and coordinated assaults.

Security analysts point to the porous border with Afghanistan as a key factor enabling such operations, with sanctuaries allegedly used for planning and retreat.

Pakistan’s military and law enforcement agencies have repeatedly emphasized the need for enhanced border management and intelligence sharing to curb cross-border militancy.

In response to the Tuesday attack, authorities have deployed additional forces to the area to bolster security and prevent follow-up incidents.

The injured Federal Constabulary personnel are expected to recover, but the event serves as a reminder of the risks faced by those serving in volatile regions.

Local residents in Salgazi and surrounding villages expressed concern over the recurring violence, calling for sustained peace efforts.

Officials assured the public that search operations would continue until the attackers are brought to justice.

The incident has prompted renewed discussions on strengthening checkpost defenses and improving coordination among police, Federal Constabulary, and other security entities.

As investigations progress, more details about the assailants’ identities and motives may emerge.

Meanwhile, security forces remain on high alert across Bannu and adjoining districts to deter further threats.

This attack adds to the tally of casualties among paramilitary and police forces in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa this year, reflecting the ongoing struggle against militancy in Pakistan’s northwest.

Authorities continue to urge vigilance and cooperation from local communities in reporting suspicious activities.
