KABUL – The NATO Senior Civilian Representative to Afghanistan (NATO SCR)Ambassador Cornelius Zimmermann has announced to send more troops toAfghanistan in wake of NATO committment to the people of Afghanistan.
He said that each and every regional player will benefit from a stableAfghanistan, Khaama Press has reported.
Speaking to reporters during a press conference of the top NATO officialsin Kabul, Ambassador Zimmermann said “We are in a win-win situation if we,all together, concentrate on protecting stability to this country.”
He said “A stable Afghanistan will be to the benefit of each and everyplayer in this region — this needs to be understood — that ultimately apeaceful and stable Afghanistan will be to the betterment of us all.”
According to a news release by the NATO-led Resolute Support Mission inAfghanistan, at the NATO Summit in Warsaw, 2016, NATO Allies and ResoluteSupport operational partners committed to sustain the NATO-led ResoluteSupport, to continue national contributions to the financial sustainment ofthe Afghan security forces, and to strengthen the Enduring Partnershipbetween NATO and Afghanistan through political dialogue and practicalcooperation.
At their meeting in November 2017, Defence Ministers from NATO Allies andResolute Support operational partners committed to increase the strength ofthe Resolute Support Mission from around 13,000 to around 16,000 troops;they also confirmed they will continue to fund the Afghan Security Forcesuntil at least 2020.
In July, 2018, a NATO Summit will be held in Brussels where heads of stateand government from NATO Allies are expected to reaffirm NATO’s continuedcommitment to Afghanistan.
NATO’s support to the Afghan Security Forces and institutions is key tosupporting the implementation of Afghan President Ashraf Ghani’s roadmap tofurther develop the Afghan security forces and institutions.
The roadmap, unveiled by the Afghan National Unity Government in early2017, outlines a plan for securing and maintaining control of 80% of thepopulation, as well as committing to continuing reforms on good governancewithin the Afghan security apparatus.
