Daesh making strong foothold in eastern Afghanistan along border with Pakistan: Afghan MP

KABUL – *Afghan parliament member Zahir Qadir claims Daesh or Islamic stateis making progress in eastern provinces of Afghanistan, insisting that thegovernment is not taking “efficient” measures to suppress the militantgroup in the country.*

“Both those armed oppositions who are being engaged in fighting in Achinand Shinwar [districts of Nangarhar] are foreign groups including MangalBagh [led Lashkar-e-Islam militant group] and Daesh which is knownglobally,” Qadir said.

Qadir made the remarks on Sunday at a gathering of dozens of Nangarharresidents who expressed concerns over the increase of insecurity andcorruption in the province.

The provincial governor’s Spokesman Ataullah Khogyani, however, said thatthe government is making serious efforts in the fight against Daesh andcorruption.

“We have had lots of success against both. The security issues resolved inthe areas that had been under high-security threats,” he said.

Supporting the government’s recent move in the peace process, Qadir alsourged the Taliban to make use of the opportunity being provided to theinsurgent group.

“Talks should be made with those Taliban [fighters] who want to makepeace, and those who are opposed, they deserve to be killed,” he said.
