Afghan Military operations failing against Taliban: Report

KABUL – Afghan Military failure against Taliban is becoming evident witheach passing day and the latest episode is revealed in which atleast 72military operations were carried out in Logar province, in the south ofKabul, in last three months but residents and local officials said theprovince is still insecure and Taliban are calling the shots in the area.

One member of Logar Provincial Council said Taliban and other insurgentgroups are active in parts of all the six districts in the province,including Pul-e-Alam city – the provincial capital, TOLO News has reported.

“The military operations which are conducted at nights are carried out by‘01 Unit’ from Kabul, independently and without coordination with localauthorities (in Logar)… There are some problems. Some houses have beendamaged during their operations,” Haseeb Stanekzai, head of the councilsaid.

Logar police said the military operations have been effective ineliminating militants in the province.

“Seventy-two (military) operations have been conducted in the past threemonths, most of them by special forces and many of them were supported byAir Force. These operations have been effective in eliminating the enemy,”Security Officer at Logar Police Headquarters, Mohammad Ayub Wardak, said.

Residents claimed civilians have also suffered financial losses in theoperations.

“The houses that have been targeted are not belonged to the Taliban,” saidAhmadullah, a resident of Shaikhan village in Baraki Barak district, wheregovernment forces conducted military operations.

Logar shares borders with Kabul and four other provinces. It also sharesborder with Pakistan.

This comes after Logar deputy governor Qamaruddin Shakib was killed in aTaliban ambush in Waghjan area in Mohammad Agha district while was on hisway to Kabul on Thursday.
