ISLAMABAD – Interpol has issued red warrants to arrest the former FinanceMinister of Pakistan Ishaq Dar. The National Accountability Bureau (NAB)previously requested the Interior Ministry to issue the warrants.
He has been accused over holding assets that are not commensurate with hisdeclared sources of income. An accountability court has declared Dar as afugitive, given his continued non-appearance at the hearings.
Upon the request of the Pakistani government, Interpol has issued the redwarrants for Ishaq Dar.
Ishaq Dar is currently residing in London, and undergoing medical treatmentas per reports. There’s no word on when he will return to Pakistan.
Interestingly, NAB’s notification regarding Ishaq Dar’s case states that:
He [Dar] is suffering from no such ailment that cannot be treated inPakistan.
The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), wrote a letter to the InternationalCriminal Police Organisation (Interpol) earlier this month as well. Theletter asked Interpol to detain Ishaq Dar, given his status as a fugitivefrom the law.
The Supreme Court of Pakistan directed to file a reference against IshaqDar on July 28 in its verdict of the Panama Papers case. The Bureau filedthe references as per the court’s orders.
However, Ishaq Dar didn’t make an appearance during the proceedings,choosing to go to UK instead. The accountability court declared him aproclaimed offender, with NAB deciding to bring him back to Pakistan withthe help of the Interpol.
Following this red notice, Ishaq Dar is likely to be arrested and broughtback to Pakistan.
