CPEC western route faces setback

ISLAMABAD – China Pakistan Economic Corridor western route faces setbackdue to the delay in project approvals by China and non-disbursement offunds allocated in the Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP).

The political transition has hit the implementation of Western Route of theChina-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).

It has been revealed by National Highway Authority (NHA) in a presentationto the Senate Standing Committee on Planning and Development on Monday.

An official of the highway authority informed the committee that some Rs25billion allocated in the PSDP for road projects under the Western Route wasnot released because of successive changes in the government over a shortperiod of time.

Likewise, the Chinese government was also taking time in approval ofprojects during the intervening period. “This has brought work on roads tostand still,” the official said.ARTICLE CONTINUES AFTER AD

The committee meeting, presided over by Senator Agha Shazeb Durrani, wasinformed that work on the Hakla-Dera Ismail Khan Motorway project was notprogressing due to funding issues. Similarly, delay on the part of China inthe approval of construction work on the Western Route from Dera IsmailKhan to Zhob was an issue.

Senator Usman Kakar alleged that there was no developmental work on theWestern Route from the past two and a half years.
