Death toll from Indonesia tsunami rises drastically

JAKARTA – Indonesia’s disaster agency says tsunami death toll climbs to222, with 843 injured and 28 missing.

The death toll from the tsunami around Indonesia’s Sunda Strait is likelyto rise even further, the country’s national disaster agency spokesmanSutopo Purwo Nugroho says.

“This number is predicted to increase because not all victims have beensuccessfully evacuated, not all health centres have reported victims andnot all locations have got complete data,” Mr Nugroho says.

The tsunami hit coastal towns around the Sunda Strait.

Deaths have been reported in Pandeglang and Serang, on Java’s western tip.These are said to be some of the hardest-hit areas.

Dozens of people were reported dead in Lampung, in southern Sumatra.
