US sends a message to Pakistan and Afghanistan

ISLAMABAD – The United States has asked Pakistan and Afghanistan toremove each other’s misunderstandings through high-level meetings,officials said.

Senior officials at the foreign ministry told The Nation that a top-levelmeeting between Pakistan and Afghanistan was expected soon.

“We are in contact (with Afghanistan) for a meeting between Prime MinisterImran Khan and (Afghanistan) President Ashraf Ghani. This (meeting) couldtake place soon,” said one official.

He said Pakistan had never run away from talks be it with Afghanistan orIndia. “In fact we have always been advocating the dialogue process,” headded.

Another official said Prime Minister Imran Khan had already invitedPresident Ghani to visit Pakistan. “The visit is under consideration. Themeeting can take place in either country,” he maintained.

Over the weekend, Pakistan and Afghanistan agreed to make efforts foravailing their geographic locations to enhance regional connectivity.

President Ghani telephoned Prime Minister Khan wherein they “discussedbilateral ties and agreed to realise the true economic potential of the twocountries for socio-economic development, poverty alleviation and welfareof the two peoples,” said an official statement.

The two leaders exchanged views on matters relating to peace, security andprosperity in Afghanistan and the region, it said.
