Pakistan Railways earns Rs 3.7 billion exta in PTI government nine months tenure

ISLAMABAD – Pakistan Railways has generated Rs 39.010 billion up to March2019 which was Rs 3.706 billion more than the previous financial yearduring the same period by winning the confidence of the passengers.

Pakistan Railways has suffered no losses during the current financial yeardue to dedicated efforts of the present government and employees of theorganization, an official in the Ministry of Railways told APP.

During the last financial year (2018), the official said that PakistanRailways has earned Rs.35.304 billion.

He said that Pakistan Railways has taken several steps to improve financialposition of the department and started 24 new trains with the same rollingstock and human resource.

Introduction of trains tracking system has contributed in reducing the fuelconsumption by 1.5 million litres, he added.

To a question, the official said that at present Pakistan Railways owned460 diesel electric locomotives, out of which, 325 are functional while 135are non­functional.

Out of 135 non-functional locomotives, he said that 69 Chinese locomotivesare requiring heavy repairs due to various design defects and thedepartment has planned to undertake rehabilitation/modernization of theselocomotives which is under process with Chinese and Turkish Railways.

He said that four locomotives are under condemnation process in light ofcondemnation plan and these engines are over aged and rendered theirservice more than 32 to 50 years against the economical life of 20 years.

The official said that seven locomotives met with accidents on variousdates, fabrication work and procurement of spares is under process andthese engines would be in operation after the completion of work.

He said that 55 engines are under normal maintenance, periodicalmaintenance schedules which is regular feature and the diesel electriclocomotives would be rolled out after repair turn by turn.
