*KARWAR, Karnataka: A naval officer died in a fire broke out at the India’sonly aircraft carrier ‘INS Vikramaditya‘ at Karwar harbour in Karnatakastate, Indian media reported on Friday.*
Lieutenant Commander DS Chauhan was reportedly lost life in the incident,*NDTV*linkreportedquoting Indian Navy’s statement.
According to the reports, Chauhan lost consciousness due to the smoke andfumes during the firefighting efforts and later he died after beingevacuated to the hospital.
The fire was brought under control by the ship’s crew and reportedlyprevented the only aircraft carrier from any serious damage affecting theship’s combat capability.
Following the fire incident, an inquiry board has been ordered to find outthe reasons. However, no further details were disclosed regarding thedamages and casualties.
The $2.3 billion aircraft carrier *‘INS Vikramaditya’ *had commissionedinto the Indian Navy in November 2013 at the Sevmash shipyard in northRussia’s Severodvinsk and brought to India in January 2014.
The reports said that the aircraft carrier is 284 metres long and 60 metreshigh — that’s about as high as a 20-storeyed building. The ship weighs40,000 tonnes and is the biggest and heaviest ship in the Indian Navy.
