No witness except Qatri prince asked JIT to send questionnaire; Zia tells court

ISLAMABAD: NAB’s witness Wajid Zia informed the accountability court that no witness except the Qatri Prince Hammad bin Jassim asked JIT to send questionnaire before appearing for recording the statement.

Nawaz Sharif’s counsel Khawaja Haris continued his cross-examining with joint investigation team (JIT) head Wajid Zia on seventh consecutive day in Flagship Investment case while the court adjourned hearing till tomorrow.

Accountability Court Judge Arshad Malik conducted hearing on corruption reference against former prime minister Nawaz Sharif filed by National Accountability Bureau (NAB).

Accused Nawaz Sharif also appeared before the court. During the cross examining, Wajid Zia informed the court that the JIT had verified the letter received by Qatri Prince Hammad bin Jassim. The team had recorded the statements of ten witnesses before June 15, 2017 that include Hassan & Hussein Nawaz, Tariq Shafi, Saeed Ahmed and Umer Cheema, he said.

He said no one amongst these witnesses demanded JIT to send questionnaire before appearing to record the statements, adding that only the Qatri prince expressed such desire.

To a question, he said that it was the unanimous decision of JIT for not sending questionnaire to anybody during the investigation process.
NAB prosecutor Sardar Muzaffar Abbasi objected over the question and stated that no question regarding witness’s statement in other reference should be asked to Zia, which was over ruled by the court.

Zia told the court that he had not given such statement in Avenfield property reference that ‘the JIT had decided not to send questionnaire to the only persons who have been served summon notices.’

To another question, he said the apex court had ordered the JIT to take decision regarding the place for recording Qatri Prince’s statement.
The JIT, he said, had conducted an inquiry on leakage of Hussein Nawaz’s picture during the investigation and submitted report with the Supreme Court in this regard, adding that he was not authorized to public the name of person who leaked this picture due to security reasons.

Later, the court adjourned hearing of the reference till Wednesday, wherein Khawaja Haris would continue his cross examining with Wajid Zia.
