WAPDA employees protest in Lahore

In Lahore, the Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) Employees Union held a protest advocating for the continuation of free electricity for WAPDA employees. This demonstration came about due to rumors that the caretaker government might terminate the provision of free electricity to WAPDA workers. The President of the WAPDA Union warned of a strong response if the free electricity benefit was taken away from employees. He also insisted on the removal of all taxes on the bills and an end to political intervention in the sector.
The surge in power bills has led to nationwide protests from Karachi to Khyber, with some protests escalating into violence. The protesters are urging the government to stop providing free electricity to influential individuals and instead provide relief, given that their bills surpass their incomes. This situation has prompted Lahore traders to announce a shutter-down strike on September 2 in protest against the high electricity bills.
The discontent regarding electricity bills has spread widely, triggering demonstrations in various parts of the country. The demand remains consistent: the government should address the issue of excessive bills that are overshadowing people's earnings and consider discontinuing the provision of free electricity to those in privileged positions. As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how the government will respond to these widespread concerns.
