PTI to file Contempt of Court petition against ECP

The spokesperson of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has stated that the decision has been made by the party to file a petition for contempt of court against the Election Commission. According to the spokesperson, the Election Commission deviated from the constitution in relation to the elections in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces.

The spokesperson mentioned that PTI has taken a legal step towards the analysis of assemblies in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, which requires the Election Commission to hold elections within 90 days before the pre-term analysis of assemblies.

The spokesperson further added that the Supreme Court, while explaining the constitutional directive for elections within 90 days, bound the Election Commission on May 14th to hold elections in Punjab. However, the Election Commission instead decided to defer elections for an indefinite period.

It should be noted that on January 12th of the current year, Punjab's Chief Minister Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi had submitted a summary for the analysis of the provincial assembly to Punjab's governor. Similarly, Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Mahmood Khan, had sent the assembly's analysis summary to the governor of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on January 17th, which was approved by the governor the next day.
