BJP is promoting intolerance culture in India: Congress leader

NEW DELHI: Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad, said the BJP was attempting to blank out former Prime Minister Jawahar Lal Nehru's contribution to the constitution and that showed its "intolerance." Mr Azad, who opened the discussion from the Congress's side on 'Commitment to the Constitution', questioned the government's motive in declaring November 26 as Constitution Day, charging it with "trying to rewrite history." "I want to ask the prime minister, where did this new date of November 26 come from? What happened to January 26 that Dr Ambedkar gave us?" he asked. Mr Azad said the Preamble to the Constitution - considered its essence - is based on Mr Nehru's objectives. "It would have been great if the government had remembered all those who were also part of the formation of the constitution...You did not remember (Nehru) or mention him anywhere," he said. Mr Azad also used the opportunity to talk of the environment of perceived intolerance in the country. "I have to say this that the environment which has been there for the past few months is against our Parliament. And the leader of the house says that this has been manufactured," he said.
