ISLAMABAD - The United States has approved the sale of high-tech defence missile systems to Japan.

Quoting the U.S. State Department, Japanese news agency Kyodo said the defence deal, worth 2.15 billion dollars, includes two Aegis weapons systems and related equipment.

It said Japan is planning to set the two Aegis Ashore missile defense in Akita and Yamaguchi prefectures by 2023 to counter North Korean missile threat.

The State Department said the systems will enhance Japan's capability against increasingly sophisticated ballistic missile threats and create an expanded layered defense.
