Disqualification limit case: SC again issues notice to Nawaz Sharif

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court of Pakistan (SC) on Tuesday (today) resumed hearing of the petitions related to the determination of time-period of disqualification under Article 62(1)(f) of the Constitution.
A five-member larger-bench of the apex court headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Justice Mian Saqib Nisar heard the case.
During the proceedings, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leder Jahangir Tareen and his counsel Babar Awan appeared before the court, while neither ex-PM Nawaz Sharif nor his counsel appeared the top court.
In today’s proceedings, the CJP remarked that they wanted that everyone should be given opportunity to present its stance, adding that they even issued notices to those who were not respondents in the case.
Babar Awan, the counsel of PTI leader Jahangir Tareen appealed the court to issue notice to the Attorney General (AG) for court’s help.
The apex court again issued notice to former premier Nawaz Sharif asking him to appear tomorrow.
Talking to media outside the Supreme Court, Jahangir Tareen said that Article 62(1)(f) is vast, adding that the people were given same punishment under Article 62(1)(f) but said now its definition is necessary.
Earlier, the top court had issued notices to former prime minister Nawaz Sharif and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s former secretary general Jahangir Tareen to appear in the court in a matter related to the determination of time-period of disqualification under Article 62(1)(f) of the Constitution.
The court asked them to appear either in person or through their counsel during the hearing.
The former premier was disqualified on July 28 last year in the Panama Papers case and being unable to declare his offshore accounts. Jahangir was disqualified on December 15 by the SC for not disclosing his offshore company.
