Arrest of Indian rights activists sparks outrage

NEW DELHI: In India, arrest of five human rights activists has triggered a fresh row of criticism on Modi-led government.

The leader of the main opposition Congress party Rahul Gandhi says the latest raids showed that the government had little tolerance for activists, except for right wing groups that shared its hardline ideology.

Indian Police arrested five human rights activists during simultaneous multi-city raids on Tuesday on the accusations of links with the Maoists and banned Communist Party of India.

More than 20 civil rights groups, lawyers forums and trade unions are also launching a campaign against the crackdown.
