India: Assamese people may opt for independence, says Akhil Gogoi

NEW DELHI: Indian leader Akhil Gogoi says Assamese people may opt for independence if proper respect is not shown to them and the Citizenship Amendment Bill is passed.

Addressing a protest rally against the proposed legislation in Assam, he said we want to make it clear that if the need and situation arises, Assamese are prepared to part way with India.

The proposed legislation seeks to provide Indian citizenship to non-Muslims from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan, and many parties and organisations have claimed that it will have an adverse impact on the demography of the sensitive border state.

Several organisations in Northeast Indian state Mizoram had also boycotted the Republic Day celebrations in protest against the Citizenship Amendment Bill.
