Relics of Buddha at Taxila handed over to Srilanka

ISLAMABAD - Relics of Buddha were handed over to Sri Lankan authorities today on the eve of annual birth anniversary celebrations of Gautama Buddha.
Joint Secretary National History and Literary Heritage Abdul Majeed Niazi, representing the Government of Pakistan, handed over the relics to Sri Lankan high commissioner in Pakistan Jayanath C.P. Lokuketagodage after signing agreement to this effect.
Under the agreement, the relics will be kept in Sri Lanka till fifth of next month during the annual celebrations marking the birth of Buddha called Vesakh Mela.
Speaking on the occasion, the Sri Lankan high commissioner thanked the Pakistani Government for this act of brotherhood and friendship. He said on reaching Sri Lanka these relics will be received by the Sri Lankan Prime Minister.
He said Vesakh Mela has become an inspiring chapter of friendship between the two countries which is strengthening with time.
