Afghan Taliban responds over media reports of deal with US

KABUL – US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has hailed significant progressmade by US special envoy for peace in Afghanistan, Zalmay Khalilzad aftersix days of talks with the Taliban in Qatar.

In a tweet, Pompeo said Washington is serious about pursuing peace andpreventing Afghanistan from continuing to be a space for internationalterrorism.

Pompeo cautioned that no deal had been finalized with the militants sayingfurther talks would resume shortly.

Meanwhile, Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said that while there wasprogress at the meetings but reports of an agreement on a ceasefire andtalks with Kabul are not true.

Meanwhile, U.S. special envoy Zalmay Khalilzad arrived in Kabul to securecooperation from the Afghan president Ashraf Ghani after breakthrough inpeace negotiations with Taliban leaders in Qatar.

A senior Afghan official said in Kabul today that Zalmay Khalilzad willinform Ghani and his officials about all the developments, seek theiropinion before traveling back to Washington.
