River Jhelum flood situation alarming

ISLAMABAD (APP): The Federal Flood Commission (FFC) has said sharp peaks of medium to high flood Level are expected in River Jhelum at Mangla (inflows) during next 24 to 48 hours.

According to daily FFC report, there is a chance of increase in flow of Hill Torrents of D.G. Khan Division ,River Ravi and Chenab during the said period.

All main rivers including Indus, Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi and Sutlej are flowing normal.

The river flows and reservoir elevations indicates that Tarbela & Mangla reservoirs are at elevations of 1541.71 feet and 1239.50 feet respectively, which are 8.29 feet & 2.50 feet below their respective Maximum Conservation Levels of 1550.00 feet and 1242.00 feet.

The combined live storage capacity of Tarbela, Chashma & Mangla reservoirs is 13.286 MAF as compared to last year's 14.067 MAF.

According to Flood Forecasting Division, Lahore, yesterday's Monsoon Low over Northwestern Rajasthan (India) has dissipated. A fresh Monsoon Low has developed over Northwestern Bay of Bengal.

Yesterday's shallow trough of Westerly Wave over Kashmir and adjoining areas has moved away Eastwards, whereas a fresh trough of Westerly Wave lies over Northern parts of Afghanistan. Weak Seasonal Low still persists over Northeastern Balochistan. Moist current is penetrating into upper parts of the country upto 5000 feet.

As predicted by the Flood Forecasting Division, Lahore, scattered thunderstorm/rain with isolated heavy falls is expected over the upper catchments of River Jhelum and Rawalpindi Division during the next 24 hours. Scattered thunderstorm/ rain may also occur over upper catchments of Rivers Chenab, Ravi & Sutlej, including Bahawalpur, Multan, D.G. Khan, Faisalabad, Gujranwala, Sargodha & Peshawar Divisions, besides, Southeastern Sindh during the same period.

Isolated thunderstorm/ rain may also occur over the upper catchments of Rivers Indus & Kabul, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (Malakand & Hazara Divisions), Lahore Division and Northeastern Balochistan during the next 24 hours.

Scattered thunderstorm/rain with isolated heavy falls is expected over the upper catchments of Rivers Indus, Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi & Sutlej including most parts of the country except Western Balochistan from Saturday to Sunday.

Significant rainfall events reported by the Flood Forecasting Division,Lahore during the past 24 hours include; Lahore (City = 66 mm, Misri Shah= 62 mm, Mughal Pura = 58 mm, Taj Pura = 57 mm, Gulberg & Iqbal Town= 52 mm each, Shahdara = 50 mm, Shahi Qilla = 48 mm, Johar Town = 46mm, Lukshmi = 45 mm, Upper Mall, Airport & Samanabad = 43 mm each,Gulshan Ravi = 39 mm & Township = 31 mm), Ravi Syphon = 58 mm,Okara = 50 mm, Parachinar = 27 mm, Gujranwala = 21 mm, Mithi = 18mm and Sialkot (Cantt) = 10 mm
