Nawaz Sharif to stay away from election campaign, intentional or forced?

LONDON – Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supremo Nawaz Sharif remarkedon Sunday that he won’t be able to participate in the electoral campaignfor the upcoming general elections due to the health of his wife KulsoomNawaz, a private TV channel reported.

While speaking to media in London, he said that his wife is suffering froman infection, adding that she also has developed fever due to theinfection. “Kulsoom Nawaz is my wife. I have certain responsibilitiestowards her.”

When asked about the Daily Mail report titled ‘Penthouse pirates: How themega-rich former prime minister of Pakistan and his sons have ploughedmillions into London’s swankiest addresses to amass a vast propertyempire’, Nawaz slammed the report as nothing but ‘propaganda’. “Those whoengage in propaganda would continue to do so,” he maintained.

The Daily Mail report refers to the Avenfield properties, on which one ofthe references filed by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) againstthe Sharif family is based. On Saturday, Nawaz Sharif had said that hewould return to Pakistan after improvement in the condition of his wife whohas been under treatment in London for past few months.

Speaking to newsmen outside the Harley Street Clinic, the former premierhad said that his wife was struggling for her life. “Can I think of goingback to Pakistan under such circumstances when Kulsoom is on ventilator? Doyou think I should return to Pakistan leaving behind my wife in such acondition?” he had asked reporters. “[We] will decide about going back toPakistan once Kulsoom’s health improves in next few days.”
