In a noteworthy statement made on Monday, Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Justice Qazi Faez Isa asserted that the practice of adjourning cases within the Supreme Court (SC) should be deemed a thing of the past. The CJP delivered these significant remarks during a pivotal land transfer case, emphasizing the imperative need to eradicate the concept of adjournments from judicial proceedings.
Justice Isa highlighted the pressing issue of an extensive backlog of cases awaiting resolution in the Supreme Court. To address this, he outlined a revised approach, asserting that parties involved in any case will be promptly served a notice during the initial hearing, with the verdict subsequently delivered at the next session. This streamlined approach aims to expedite the judicial process and curb the tendency to unnecessarily delay cases.
Furthermore, the CJP used this particular case as a clarion call to convey a resolute message: the era of case adjournments has come to a close. He observed that in some other courts, extensions of time are frequently granted for the submission of documents, contributing to prolonged litigation. Justice Isa underscored that the Supreme Court, as the apex judicial authority, already possesses comprehensive records of all case judgments, making adjournments a superfluous practice in its proceedings.
