PTI MNAs to en masse resign in case of success of No Trust Motion, paving way for new elections: Report

ISLAMABAD – Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) Members of the National Assembly may resign en masse following possible success of the no-trust motion against PM Imran Khan so that opposition leaders facing corruption cases could not manage what Imran Khan had been denying them since coming into power; the ‘NRO’, by amending the NAB laws, and also reverse right of vote to overseas Pakistanis in a post-Imran scenario, highly reliable sources in the PTI told The Nation on Thursday.

The opposition parties have announced to form a coalition government at the Centre after ousting PM Imran Khan through a no-confidence motion and they would continue until ‘necessary reforms’ are made. On the other hand, there is a strong perception in the PTI ranks that proposed reforms would be exclusively aimed at giving relief to opposition leaders facing corruption cases. “The en masse resignations would put pressure on the system to call fresh elections and deny opportunity to opposition parties to form a government at the Centre and amend the laws,” the PTI believes.

According to party sources, the allies and the JKT group would also be politely conveyed that they would get nothing out of opposition’s promises if the PTI government is ousted. The PTI thinks that the allies may fall prey to opposition’s offer of Punjab CM slot and may support the opposition on no-confidence motion. The main ally party in Punjab and JKT group have been demanding of the PTI the Punjab Chief Minister slot in return for their support to the government in no-confidence motion. However, the PTI seems in no mood to offer the slot.

According to a source in the PTI, “Imran Khan will never let opposition leaders manage the NRO under the umbrella of a so-called coalition government at the Centre. The opposition leaders are on record that NAB will be their first target after they form a government at the Centre and this is how they want to get clean chit from the courts. They also want to reverse the law granting the right of vote to overseas Pakistanis”. The opposition parties have announced to go for economic and election reforms soon after sending the PTI government home.

The PTI believes that election reforms would be exclusively aimed at denying right of vote to overseas Pakistanis in next general election. Background interaction with the party leaders suggests that the PTI is equally hopeful of bouncing back and coming back to power again as a result of the next general elections after being ousted through the no-confidence vote. “The crowd in the recent public rallies of the PTI has also encouraged us and we are not ready to give a walk over to the opposition parties in the next general elections,” said the source further. PM Imran Khan cannot send an advice to the President to dissolve assemblies after notice of a resolution for a vote of no-confidence has been given in the National Assembly against him yet he can ask the PTI MNAs to tender en masse resignations to stir a political crisis. Article 58 of the constitution says that the President may also dissolve the National Assembly in his discretion where, in his opinion a vote of no-confidence having been passed against the Prime Minister and no other member of the National Assembly is likely to command the confidence of the majority of the members of the National Assembly. Almost having lost at the parliamentary front, the PTI has decided to take on the opposition on the political front.
