Every third woman is victim of torture in Punjab: LHC CJ

LAHORE: Lahore High Court Chief Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah on Monday said that every third woman was a victim of torture in the province.

Addressing inauguration of first Gender Based Violence Court here, he said, "We have to keep our mothers, sisters and daughters in mind to understand gender based violence cases."

He said, "Women are weak in our society and they face sexual, physical and mental torture and every third woman faces such a torture in our province."

Recalling developments for establishment of the Gender Based Violence Court, he said such court was badly needed and it was established keeping in view orders of the Supreme Court in Salman Akram Raja case, international practices and foreign courts.

He said that the women faced difficult circumstances in the society but if they approached the court with a complaint and faced similar situation then it would mean failure.

The Chief Justice said that the court was a symbol of security and justice for litigants but if there was no hope of security and justice from it then where the people would go.

He said that despite clear directions of the apex court in the Salman Akram Raja case, no step was taken for implementation of the decision since 2013.

He said that the Gender Based Violence Court would provide an opportunity to every victim woman for recording her statement against torture in a secure and peaceful environment.

He also appreciated efforts of District and Sessions Judge Lahore Abid Hussain Qureshi for ensuring establishment of the court in a week time. He said that a similar model court would be established for children soon.

The Chief Justice urged bar to play a positive role in this regard and help in ensuring provision of justice to the litigants.

Justice Aalia Neelam, Lahore Bar Association President Chaudhry Tanveer Akhtar, D&SJ Lahore Abid Qureshi and DG Punjab judicial Academy Mah Rukh Aziz and others also spoke on the occasion.

Justice Sardar Muhammad Shamim Khan, Justice Muhammad Qasim Khan, LHC Registrar Khurshid Rizvi, Director General District Judiciary Muhammad Akmal Khan, besides a large number of law officers and lawyers, were present on the occasion.
