DG IB briefs Senate committee on tapping Phone calls of parliamentarians

ISLAMABAD: (APP) The Senate Standing Committee on Rules of Procedure and Privileges on Monday was apprised that telephone calls of parliamentarians were not being tapped adding that no phone call could be tapped even with the permission of Prime Minister.
Director General Intelligence Bureau (IB) Aftab Sultan informed the Senate body, which met with Dr Jehanzeb Jamaldini that neither phone calls of the parliamentarians were being tapped nor IB had received any direction from any quarter in that regard.

He said 98 per cent phone calls of terrorists were being tapped.
Responding to a question, the DG apprised phone calls could be tapped under Telegraph Act 1818, Pakistan Telecom Act 1996 and under instructions of Cabinet Division.
Earlier, Senator Saleem Mandviwala questioned on whom direction his phone calls were tapped.
The committee also expressed displeasure on absence of Inspector General of Punjab Police and deferred the privilege motion moved by Senator Atta ur Rehman against irresponsible, insulting and threatening attitude of DPO Mianwali Sadiq Ali Dogar and others.
The committee was told that Punjab police had hired seven psychologists to train newly recruited officials at police training schools and colleges.

Chief Secretary Balochistan Saifullah Chatta apprised that he could not attend committee's meeting due to Cabinet meeting.
The Secretary Establishment told that they would appear before the standing committees whenever they were asked to do so.
However, they should be allowed to send additional secretaries in case of unavoidable circumstance.
The meeting was attended by Senators Saleem Mandviwala, Saleem Zia, Nighat Mirza, Osman Saifullah and Maulana Atta Ur Rehman and Chief Secretaries KPK, Balochistan, Secretary Parliamentary Affairs and other senior officials.
