ISLAMABAD —
Pakistan’s military, in a rare announcement, said Friday that it hadinitiated court-martial proceedings against two senior officers on chargesof espionage.
The army spokesman made the revelation at a news conference at the generalheadquarters in Rawalpindi.
“There are two [senior army] officers who are under military custody on thecharges of espionage,” said Maj. Gen. Asif Ghafoor.
He emphasized the two cases were not linked with each other and said therewas “no network as such.” Ghafoor gave no details about the officers’identity, ranks or countries for which they allegedly were spying.
“The army chief has ordered a field general court-martial [of theofficers], which is currently in the process,” Ghafoor said. Details of thecourt-martial will be shared with reporters once it is concluded, he added.
A one-star general and a three-star general are among detainees, a seniorarmy official told VOA.
