PPP leader Syed Khursheed Ahmed Shah has offered advice to the PML-N, discouraging them from pursuing action against former army chief Gen (retd) Qamar Javed Bajwa and retired Lt-Gen Faiz Hamid, the former spymaster, and advising against confrontations on this matter.
These remarks from the senior PPP leader come in response to recent strong statements from PML-N leader Nawaz Sharif, who held these two officials responsible for his removal from power in 2017 and the ongoing crises in the country.
Nawaz Sharif's statement included allegations against former chief justices Saqib Nisar and Asif Saeed Khosa, whom he referred to as tools of the former army chief and his spy chief.
He expressed a determination to hold them accountable for their actions. Similarly, PML-N leader Rana Sanaullah criticized former generals Bajwa and Hamid, labeling them "national criminals" and demanding action against them, pledging to bring them to justice.
During an interview on DawnNewsTV's 'Doosra Rukh,' Khursheed Shah responded to Nawaz's statement, suggesting that the PML-N's plan to pursue the two former military leaders appeared challenging to materialize.
He referred to the example of former military dictator Musharraf, who faced legal proceedings but later left the country for medical treatment. Khursheed Shah advised the PML-N to avoid engaging in such conflicts and instead focus on ensuring fair elections, addressing rising inflation, adhering to the Charter of Democracy, and establishing good governance practices.
He expressed the PPP's interest in cooperation and institution-building and emphasized the importance of parliament. Regarding the demand for a level playing field in elections from the PML-N, Shah pointed out that some individuals associated with Nawaz's party were part of the incumbent caretaker government.
He also made a comment about the influence of the Establishment Division's secretary in the current political landscape. When asked about the process of appointing the interim prime minister, he confirmed that the announcement of Anwaarul Haq Kakar's appointment was made after both then-PM Shehbaz and former opposition leader Raja Riaz were handed written chits with the caretaker premier's name.
