Two separate applications have been submitted to the Islamabad High Court, aiming to reinstate appeals regarding the sentencing of PML-N leader Nawaz Sharif in the Avenfield and Al-Azizia cases, which were pursued by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB). These applications have been filed by Lawyer Amjad Pervaiz on behalf of Nawaz Sharif.
The Avenfield reference case resulted in a sentence being pronounced in Nawaz Sharif's absence on July 6, 2018. According to the petition, at that time, the petitioner's wife was undergoing medical treatment in London and was on a ventilator. A request for a delay in the judgment was made, but it was not granted.
The application also notes that despite the sentence being announced in his absence, Nawaz Sharif returned to Pakistan, faced imprisonment, and filed appeals against the verdict.
While the sentences of co-accused individuals Maryam Nawaz and Capt Safdar were annulled, Nawaz Sharif's appeal was dismissed due to his non-appearance in court. The court indicated that the appeal could be filed again when he either surrendered or was apprehended, acknowledging Nawaz Sharif's inability to be present due to his poor health.
The petition emphasizes that Nawaz Sharif did not misuse his bail facility and mentions that although he has not fully recovered, he made the decision to return home.
