Afghan Taliban capture Nawzad and Qila Musa districts of Helmand province
KABUL: Afghan Taliban retreated Afghan Army and captured two districts Nawzad and Musa Qala in southern province of Helmand.

 

Provincial governor Khan Rahimi said “The Afghan Army retreated from two army bases in Musa Qala and one base from Nawazad district.”

 

He claimed that troops have been withdrawn and moved in other vulnerable areas of Helmand to ensure security of less affected districts.

 

Deputy Chief of provincial council Abdul Majeed Akhundaza criticized the decision and said “Retreating from Musa Qala looks to me   as ignoring the deaths of Afghan security forces and civilians.”

 

Helmand is one of the major province in which Taliban militants have strong hold.

 

Taliban have boosted their campaign against local forces since the end of NATO’s combat mission in 2014.

 

Taliban are targeting civilians and Afghan policemen in suicide attacks.

 

Afghan Taliban recently targeted a police commander in which at least 13 people died and 19 wounded in a suicide attack in Parwan province.

 

US General Campbell decided to send 100 US military soldiers to Helamnd who will not take part in fight but assist Afghan forces in the Helmand province.

 

Helmand is a major center for production of opium and remained an important area between NATO forces and Taliban since 2001.

 

Afghanistan is also negotiating with Taliban with the support of QCG and fourth round of the process is being held in Kabul.
