Chairman NAB addresses UN Convention against Corruption

ISLAMABAD: (APP) Chairman National Accountability Bureau (NAB), Qamar Zaman Chaudhry on Tuesday said Bureau's National Anti-Corruption Strategy (NACS) has started yielding positive dividends.
He was addressing at United Nations Convention against Corruption (UNCAC) on "Prevention of Corruption and Ensuring Integrity in Sports" at Vienna, Austria.
The Chairman gave a detailed account of measures taken by Pakistan Cricket Board and Pakistan Sports Board to educate supervise and monitor both players and sports administrators about challenges of doping, match fixing, betting and bribery.
According to a message received here, he said commercialization poses threats to integrity of sports as well as ethical social and cultural values attached with sports.
He said Pakistan is a signatory of Copenhagen declaration and UNESCO convention on doping in sports. Pakistan is bound to implement World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) code. In 2009 Pakistan adopted WADA code and an anti-doping organization was formed within Pakistan Sports Board.
The Chairman said establishment of Anti-Corruption Security Unit (ACSU) took place in Pakistan Cricket Board in year 2010.
Pakistan is a pioneer to introduce domestic anti-corruption code as per International Cricket Council (ICC) guidelines. Now, a close monitoring and vigilance mechanism has been established to have close eye on performance and activities of players and associates to stop corruption.
The Chairman NAB said it is encouraging that for the first time Anti-Corruption has been made a part of development agenda in Pakistan in the context of Governance.
He said that NAB has established its first Forensic Science LAB which has facilities of Digital Forensics, Questioned Documents and Fingerprint Analysis. He said that NAB has devised Internal Accountability Mechanism (IAM). Under the Internal Accountability Mechanism (IAM), all complaints against NAB employees are scrutinized and investigated by Chairman Inspection and Monitoring Team.
At the same time, NAB encouraged the officers to perform their duties on merit. Through a combination of above measures and procedures NAB is geared up to augment its drive against corruption with renewed zeal and energy.
NAB has taken a lead in establishing a path way for effectively combating corruption in the system. Under Awareness and prevention regime, NAB has established more than 22,000 Character Building Societies (CBS) in Universities and Colleges all over the country for sensitizing youth, the future leaders of our country against corruption.
In order to implement the anti-corruption drive, NAB, under its awareness campaign is making significant efforts to reach out to the masses through the print and electronic media by holding various activities under its country wide awareness campaign on "Say No to Corruption".
