Lahore: In a major move to enhance its counter-terrorism capabilities, the Punjab government has decided to deploy advanced assault drones. The decision was made during a high-level meeting of the “Counter-Terrorism and Hardened the State Committee,” chaired by Provincial Minister Malik Sohaib Ahmed. The meeting reviewed ongoing security measures in Punjab under the National Action Plan.
According to the provincial minister, six state-of-the-art assault drones are being procured to counter terrorist threats, with one already deployed in Dera Ghazi Khan to enable immediate and effective response to any attack. Security forces remain on high alert in other sensitive areas, including Mianwali.
The meeting also saw the approval of a special WhatsApp helpline to provide real-time assistance and guidance to Chinese nationals living in the province. Additionally, the government is actively verifying the workforce employed on various development projects and has ordered the collection of data on foreign and out-of-province students enrolled in educational institutions across Punjab.
Under the National Action Plan, Punjab Police has carried out over 2,000 intelligence-based operations (IBOs). Construction of 14 joint check posts is also underway across the province. To prevent cross-border militant activity, security is being provided to passenger buses heading towards Balochistan. The minister further revealed that a major crackdown on drug trafficking is ongoing, with authorities having seized over 19,000 kilograms of narcotics, including 1,700 kg of heroin and 1,010 kg of crystal meth (ice).
Earlier, Punjab Police had announced plans to purchase large drones to target criminals hiding in remote areas. Initially, 25 drones will be acquired for use across the province, with a budget allocation of Rs. 35 million. A summary seeking an NOC for the procurement had already been sent to the federal interior ministry, and the tendering process will begin once approval is granted.
According to police officials, these drones will not only conduct aerial surveillance via cameras but will also be equipped to carry and deploy 60mm mortar shells. The range of these drones will cover several kilometers, enabling precision strikes on targets. The drones will be capable of both monitoring and engaging hostile elements, significantly boosting the operational effectiveness of law enforcement agencies.
