The opening of the new Gwadar International Airport, constructed as part of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), has faced a one-year delay.
A reliable insider from the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) informed ARY News that the originally scheduled inauguration of the new Gwadar Airport for this month has been postponed due to technical issues.
Reports indicate that the delay stems from the late arrival of airport equipment and technology from China to Pakistan, with these goods expected to reach Gwadar by sea later this month.
Sources suggest that Chinese authorities have set June 2024 as the new inauguration date for the airport, with full operational readiness targeted for completion by 2025.
Situated 26 kilometers northeast of the existing Gwadar airport, the new airport project was allocated 3,000 acres of land by the Pakistani government. Similar to the new Islamabad Airport, the Gwadar Airport is Pakistan's second greenfield airport.
Once operational, it will have the capacity to serve various aircraft, including ATR 72, Airbus (A-300), Boeing (B-737), and Boeing (B-747), catering to both domestic and international routes
