ISLAMABAD - In a surprise, PIA distributed free tickets worth Rs 10 crore in previous tenure.
Over the last ten years, Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) allegedly distributed free plane tickets among various bureaucrats and politicians, causing huge losses to the national exchequer.
The Supreme Court of Pakistan took up the issue and directed the national flag carrier to conduct an audit which brought major irregularities into the light.
According to the audit report, PIA, in the last ten years, issued plane tickets worth Rs. 100 million to these people. Former PIA chairmen, pilots, politicians, businessmen, and bureaucrats were among those who took advantage of these plane tickets.
From July 2016 to September 2018, PIA incurred a total loss of Rs. 18.7 million in the shape of free plane tickets. In 2016, plane tickets of worth Rs. 2.4 million were given away to 122 personalities. Free plane tickets worth Rs. 5.6 million were distributed among 356 passengers in 2017. In the first 8 months of 2018, 356 free plane tickets of worth Rs. 10.8 million were issued.
